Königsee Implants: What rattan has to do with bone healing
Rattan is usually associated with a completely different context. Very few people would probably have expected the plant to one day play a role in bone surgery.
Yet it is precisely its unique internal structure that makes it of interest to the medical field. The Italian company GreenBone Ortho uses rattan as a natural starting point for b.Bone, a biomorphic bone substitute with a regenerative 3D matrix. Using a specialised process, the original structure of the rattan is transformed into a highly porous, three-dimensionally cross-linked structure based on calcium phosphate.
Since September, Königsee Implantate has been GreenBone Ortho’s exclusive distribution partner in Germany. The Thuringian implant manufacturer is thus expanding its portfolio to include a product range that usefully complements its own implant systems. Whilst these are used to stabilise bone fractures, bone substitutes can play a role where additional bone defects need to be treated.
To ensure that the sales team can present the new material to clinics in a technically sound manner, b.Bone was the focus of a product training session at Königsee Implantate last week. The GreenBone team travelled from Italy for the occasion and, in addition to explaining the development and manufacture of the material, also shared scientific and clinical findings as well as key aspects of its application.
A significant part of the training focused on practical application. The staff worked with the material themselves, enabling them to familiarise themselves with its properties and processing options. This practical understanding is particularly relevant for future collaboration with surgeons and surgical teams.
The partnership brings together two distinct areas of expertise. GreenBone contributes its experience in the field of biomorphic bone substitute materials. Königsee Implantate complements this with decades of experience in osteosynthesis, its own implant systems and close collaboration with clinicians in German hospitals.
At the same time, the collaboration demonstrates just how internationally positioned medical technology from Thuringia is today. Knowledge and development from Italy meet long-standing experience in the treatment of bone fractures in Königsee and are brought from there to the German market.
With b.Bone, Königsee Implantate is therefore not only expanding its product portfolio. The partnership also opens up new possibilities for integrating implant systems and bone substitutes in the treatment of bone defects.
