HISTORY OF THE RADIUS PLATE 3.5
Precursor in the development of angle-stable implants
Innovative implants
In 2003 a development project involving Dr Uwe Petereit MD and Königsee Implantate was born of an idea. Together, they developed the world’s first angle-stable distal radius plate 3.5 which would go on to be awarded “Most innovative project of the year”. This implant was the first to allow three angle-stable screws in the plate head. An absolute innovation in the field of osteosynthesis.
Classic as a precursor
The anatomical form of the plate in combination with its angle stability and variable angle stability enabled the treatment of all extra-articular and almost all intra-articular fractures without supplementary measures. The monoaxial angle stability has the advantage that it induces a reduction to near-anatomical conditions in all cases. In the case of intra-articular comminuted fractures, the variable angle stability created excellent conditions for positioning the screws according to the individual fracture situation.
Products to suit every fracture
The distal radius plate 3.5 has been continually improved and developed in collaboration with Dr Uwe Petereit MD, resulting in the original “Classic” variant and culminating in the additional product variants Vario, Minor, Quadro and Twin. The Classic and Minor radius plates were available as an angle-stable and a variable angle-stable variant.
Well-deserved retirement
While it was hard at first to make the decision to withdraw the distal radius plate 3.5, for so many years our signature product, we already have a new generation of radius plates that meet the exacting requirements of modern implants and accommodate all kinds of fractures. Our new range of radius plates has better functional outcomes and a lower complication rate.
Facts about the radius plate 3.5
The “Classic” featured 3 holes in the head area and was available in an angle-stable and a variable angle-stable design. The next stage in its evolution was the “Vario”, featuring 3 connected holes for screws in the head area. Our “Minor” also had 3 holes in the head area, but a narrower head width. It was also available in an angle-stable and a variable angle-stable design. “Quadro” was a success with its 4 holes in the head area for better fracture treatment. And the last incarnation in the family of radius plates 3.5 was the “Twin”. It had 2 rows with a total of 5 holes in the head area.
OTHER RADIUS PLATES FROM OUR DEVELOPMENT
Radius plate 2.0 for more flexibility securing fragments
Back in 2004 we expanded our range with the radius plate 2.0/3/5 in collaboration with Dr Klaus-Dieter Haselhuhn MD. Featuring a narrower screw, this allows more screws to be used in the plate head so that more fragments can be secured. This implant is available in dorsal and palmar versions.
Radius plate 2.7 with adapted anatomical form
The next step in the development was the variable angle-stable distal radius plate 2.7 with Dr Klaus-Jürgen Maier MD. Here the focus was on using thinner screws in the plate shaft. Screws were also arranged in two rows in the head area to secure even small fragments. The plates are available with two different head widths: the narrow variant with 5 head holes and the wide variant with 7. The screws can be inserted at an angle of ± 15°.
A step closer to optimum treatment with the radius plate 2.4
In 2017, Königsee Implantate responded to the demand for thinner, narrower plates. Together with Dr Markus Graf MD, we developed the variable angle-stable distal radius plate 2.4 which not only had a thinner design, but also had a flattened head to avoid soft tissue irritation. The radius plate 2.4 is available with two different head widths, one with 7 head holes and one with 9 head holes, each arranged in 2 rows. In 2020 another variant of the distal radius plate 2.4 was launched in collaboration with Prof. Dr Uwe Joosten MD, which allowed positioning along the watershed line.
